BREEAM

Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment, abbreviated as BREEAM, is a sustainability assessment system that was established in the UK in 1990. Today, BREEAM is used globally to evaluate and measure the environmental performance of buildings throughout their lifecycle – from design and construction to use and renovation.

Assessment categories

To assess a building's level of sustainability through BREEAM, measurements are taken across several categories. These categories cover key factors such as CO2 reduction, ecological value, durability, and resilience to climate change. Some of the most important categories include:

  • Use of sustainable materials
  • Protection of nature and biodiversity
  • Reduction of energy consumption
  • Positive impact on health
  • Less pollution
  • Application of new solutions and technologies to promote sustainability

For more information about how to assess the sustainability of buildings, please visit BREEAM's website.

Benefits

Some of the benefits of BREEAM include enhanced reliability and value creations. Here are some specific benefits of BREEAM:

  • Increases property value
  • Reduces reputational and asset risks
  • Offers effective data management
  • Uses a scientific framework
  • Ensures compliance with international regulations and commitments
