The upper school at School on Islands Brygge
In the heart of Islands Brygge, Copenhagen Harbour, and Amager Fælled lies the upper school section of Skolen på Islands Brygge – a school building for older students with a unique focus on food and physical activity.
The school’s special focus integrates theoretical teaching with a physical and sensory approach. Food is a key part of the school’s identity, and therefore, the dining area serves as the central space. With movement as another focal point, the school’s architecture encourages physical activity and play. This is especially achieved through the building’s dynamic spiral shape, featuring a staircase motif that invites students to explore the active rooftop. The rooftop landscape connects several of the school’s facilities, allowing students to take a fun and active shortcut across the roof. At the very top is the sports deck, providing ample opportunity for physical activities, including a running track, a parkour area, and a ball cage.
For this project, we have produced:
- Internal double-glazed units, for example, for the sports hall
- External double-glazed units for the façade
- Round glass skylights that provide beautiful natural lighting
- Glass balustrades on the rooftop
The project is scheduled for completion in August 2021.
