Oslo ny lægevagt

Press release

Danish glass manufacturer supplies decorative printed glass for Oslo's new emergency medical centre.

Glaseksperten is experiencing a significant increase in demand for digital ceramic printed glass, which offers customers countless opportunities to add their own creative touch to the design. There is especially high interest in printed glass in the Norwegian market, and Glaseksperten has recently supplied an exciting solution with printed façade glass for Oslo's new, large emergency medical centre.

When residents of Oslo visit the emergency medical centre, they are welcomed by a brand-new, modern building designed to provide a comfortable environment for both staff and patients. The façade glass plays a crucial role in the project, as architects have chosen printed glass, which offers extensive possibilities for creating a design tailored to each building. Glaseksperten, Denmark’s largest producer of architectural glass, has supplied the glass for the Oslo Storbylegevakt, which opens in November. This order is just the latest in a series of requests for digital ceramic printed glass.

This type of glass can be used both indoors and outdoors and is highly resistant to weather and environmental elements. It serves a variety of functions, including decoration, screening, and marking, and is used in applications such as glass balustrades, partitions, glazed units, and glass staircases. The delivery for Oslo's emergency medical centre includes 120 square metres of printed façade glass, integrated within sections of the building’s triple-glazed units. The printed glass also serves as solar control.

Printed glass offers clear advantages, as customers can create designs specifically suited to the buildings they are constructing. Customers can select patterns and colour combinations, as our advanced glass printer provides unlimited creative possibilities. At the same time, printed glass is not only a more aesthetic solution than silk screening and interlayers, but also has a longer lifespan compared to, for example, external interlayers, explains Siggi Strandeng, Export Manager at Glaseksperten.

Glaseksperten has been involved in the process from the beginning, participating in project meetings with H-Fasader, who selected Glaseksperten as the supplier, as well as the architects and Skanska, the contractor on the project.

- We are very satisfied with the quality and our collaboration with Glaseksperten. We used printed glass on the large glass façades connected to the main entrance, which faces south. There is a need for solar control, and it is far more practical to use printed glass instead of a motorised physical shading system, which can often appear closed and uninviting as it would frequently be in a lowered position. It was crucial to create an open and welcoming main entrance, says Yann Olav Brandvol, Senior Architect at Nordic – Office of Architecture, adding:

- The printed glass creates a design that forms an image when viewed from a distance, with a more abstract pattern up close. We wanted the printed glass to feature an artistic design referencing nature and the green hillside near the emergency centre. Additionally, we chose to vary the density of the glass pattern. This allows us to let in more sunlight and warmth in the large room on the first floor, while the control room by the main entrance requires a denser pattern for sun protection.

In addition to the printed façade glass, Glaseksperten has also supplied double- and triple-glazed units used elsewhere in the building.

High demand for printed glass
Glaseksperten is experiencing increased demand for digital ceramic printed glass, as many architects and customers are recognising the numerous possibilities it offers. The company has invested in an advanced glass printer capable of reproducing colours, graphics, and text at a resolution of up to 720 dpi with exceptional quality.

- Demand for printed glass has been steadily rising, and we are currently seeing a great deal of interest in it. This is partly because customers are increasingly aware that printed glass has diverse applications, offers long durability, provides creative freedom, and contributes to DGNB certification points. We receive a particularly high number of inquiries from Norway, where demand is sharply increasing – not only for printed glass but also for our many other solutions, says Siggi Strandeng.
