Latinergården
Printed glass balustrades for modern functionalist homes
Latinergården, with 120 apartments, shops, and an underground car park, is a prime example of how a modern building integrates into a classic architectural context.
The façade features a clean design with repeating elements of window sections, balconies, and smaller windows. The façade is elegantly divided into a base for shops and commercial spaces, and an upper section. The shop facades are clad in travertine, which flows dynamically around entrances and windows in a continuous band. The gutter separates the base from the upper section, preventing downpipes from the roof and balconies from running down along the base.
In designing the balconies, Arkitema Architects sought to integrate the building and balance the classical with the modern. Anders Warmdahl Mikkelsen, architect and creative lead at Arkitema Architects, explains that the glass balconies were designed with careful consideration for the street view:
“The other balconies on the street are white, enclosed, with very low parapets, and are an important part of Borggade's streetscape. The glass balconies on Latinergården have a lighter expression, and, with the graduated white colour towards the top, they appear lower. However, it is advantageous that they are not transparent at the bottom, making the balconies more private and anonymous. The undersides of the balconies are also white, giving them a more cohesive appearance.”
