Esbjerg Realskole

The beautiful copper roof at Esbjerg Realskole has been renovated using MicroShade® glazed units.

The temperature in the assembly hall at Esbjerg Realskole became very high when the sun shone in the spring and summer, so the school needed an effective solar control solution when the building, consisting of 96 units, was due for renovation. The solution chosen was MicroShade® glazed units from Glaseksperten, as neither external solar control nor a traditional solar interlayer was a suitable option.

The assembly hall is topped with a beautiful copper structure, and the glass band containing 96 units previously had tinted glazing. However, the temperature in the hall still became very high when it was hot outside. Therefore, the school sought a more effective solution.

Engineer Jørgen Brunsgaard from INGENIØR'NE served as the advisor on the project. He explained that the school wanted to avoid external physical solar control, as it would impact the building's appearance, which is listed, and an external solution at the height of the 4th floor could easily be damaged by the strong winds in the area. Several different solutions were considered, including a traditional solar interlayer applied to the glass, but this was not ideal either, as this type of interlayer can discolour over time and may break.

Jørgen Brunsgaard had heard about MicroShade® and presented the idea to the client. After viewing samples of the glass, it was clear that glazed units with good insulation properties and integrated MicroShade® were the solution that could address the school's challenges, as direct sunlight is blocked while natural daylight is allowed in. Additionally, the glazed units with MicroShade® are maintenance-free.

Renovation work was carried out during the summer holidays, and when students and staff returned to school in August, they found that the lighting conditions in the assembly hall were excellent. The school is also pleased that the large temperature fluctuations in the hall are now a thing of the past, thanks to the replacement of the glazing.

We produced 96 units of 2-layer MicroShade® glazed units with 6mm toughened glass and our energy-efficient Super Spacer®.
