580 Glazed Units to Enhance Historic Monument in Norway

In 2021, the former American embassy in Norway will reopen with social and cultural spaces for the public. As part of this transformation, we will recreate the original windows for the large glass structure designed by the renowned architect Eero Saarinen in 1951. This requires the production of 580 triple-glazed units, each measuring 655 x 2,105 mm, fitted with specially designed blinds.

According to the architect, Eero Saarinen, the embassy building was intended to symbolise the strong post-war ties between the USA and Norway. As such, the structure was meant to evoke the image of a man dressed in formal attire.

The focus of the renovation is to build upon the building's inherent qualities and requirements while also addressing modern demands for sound reduction and heat loss prevention. To achieve the necessary strength for the embassy’s impressive windows, the glass will be made from 8 mm toughened Optiwhite glass. Additionally, the triple-glazed units, featuring custom-made blinds, will provide substantial thermal and acoustic insulation, ensuring that cultural events inside remain undisturbed by external noise and comply with modern building standards.

The former embassy building will accommodate office and workspace facilities, a restaurant with 360-degree views, and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Norwegian Royal Family's palace park.
